Some vehicle names would tell you exactly what you should expect from
the vehicle while others won't. But for the Audi Cabriolet, both are
true. True to its name, the Audi Cabriolet is a convertible. In
appearance, it is also similar to the vehicle sold in Europe that
fielded the same name. But the American-spec Audi Cabriolet is more
than just a replica of the European Cabriolet, because the American
Cabriolet offered something more.
The Audi Cabriolet was introduced in the U.S. in 1994, three
years after the car first appeared in the European market. The car was
given a gorgeous exterior, just as its European counterpart was; but
the American-spec Audi Cabriolet was far more powerful. Instead of the
133 hp 2.3-liter 5-cylinder engine that was standard with the European
model, the new Audi Cabriolet was equipped with a 2.8-liter V6 engine
that outputs 172 hp and 177 ft-lb of torque. This engine is gasoline
powered and registered a city/highway fuel economy rating of 18/26 mpg.
Aside from power, the comfort and safety characteristics of
the Audi Cabriolet were also given a boost for its American debut. With
maximum seating for four, the Cabriolet featured leather seats, power
door locks, power windows, and air conditioning system as standard
equipments. In terms of safety equipments, driver and passenger air
bags were standard together with ABS brakes. All the other pleasant
characteristics of the original Audi Cabriolet was retained for the
American version.
Despite the good characteristics of the Audi Cabriolet, it lasted only
until the 1998 model year before Audi eventually pulled it off its
vehicle line-up. This, however, should not be a reason to totally
forget such a great car. The Audi Cabriolet can still perform well
today. In fact, it may even be able to outperform some of the new
convertibles that we have now. But one would surely need to install
some replacement, restoration and performance Audi Cabriolet parts for
this to happen.
