It is the dream of every auto manufacturer that the vehicle they produce would be highly regarded by the automotive press. This dream became a reality for Audi when the company introduced the Audi Coupe in the U.S. automotive market. Through the years, the Audi Coupe has been rated highly by the automotive press because of its capable suspension and powerful engine. But Audi must not have dreamt enough; for while the Coupe was a favorite among the automotive columnists, it wasn't that popular in the eye's of the vehicle buyers.

The Audi Coupe was introduced in the U.S. for the 1981 model year. A derivative of the turbo Audi Quattro Coupe, which was previously sold only in the European market, the Audi Coupe sports the same body and style used on the European car. However, there are significant differences between the two, including the absence of the flared fender on the American version. Instead of an all-wheel drive car, the Audi Coupe was a front-wheel drive vehicle and was equipped with smaller wheels compared to the European model.

Upon introduction, the Audi Coupe was equipped with a normally aspirated 5-cylinder engine that outputs 100 hp of power and 112.4 lb-ft of torque. The said engine was upgraded for the 1985 model year, a year after its name became the Audi Coupe GT, to output 10 hp more power. For its 1987 model, which was also the final year for the said coupe, another engine was added—a 5-cylinder engine that outputs 130 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque.

In 1991, Audi's coupe was introduced and was then named as the Audi Coupe Quattro. The real coupe version of the Audi Quattro, a best selling car in Europe, the Audi Coupe Quattro was more powerful than the past Audi Coupe models. But just like the previous Audi Coupe models, the Audi Coupe Quattro did not fare well to the Americans.

A not so popular car but a very capable one, the Audi Coupe is always fun to drive, then and now. Today, however, the car is old and it may not perform as well if not equipped with high quality restoration, repair and performance Audi Coupe parts.
