It was in 1952 when BMW made its first passenger car, designed to compete with premium quality autos. But BMW was not so successful in this endeavor. It began its success with the bubble car BMW Isetta, made in the late 1950s. Also, BMW manufactured the small air-cooled car, BMW 700 in the 50s. This was used in most racing competitions BMW had joined that time. Its racing feats gave rise to BMW’s reputation as a top sports sedan maker.
The BMW 524 is among the BMW 5-series autos made from 1982 until 1988. This BMW series is identified by the auto platform BMW E28, which replaced the BMW E12 used for earlier BMW 5-seiries models, including the BMW 518, BMW 520i, BMW 525i, BMW 528i, BMW 530i and BMW M535i. Together with the BMW 524 is the first M5 version of BMW. This version was the highest performing 5-series BMW and was known as the fastest production saloon car in the world. It carried a powerful 24-valve DOHC straight-6 engine integrated with Bosch Motronic fuel injection.
BMW 5-series cars are medium sized autos available in four-door sedans and station wagons. The BMW 524 had two versions: the BMW 524d and BMW 524td. Both were available in Europe together with the 518/518i, 520i, 525i, 528i, 535i/ M535i and M5 5-series models. In America, only the BMW 524td version was offered along with other 5-series models. The difference between the two 524 models is that the other one got a turbo diesel engine (524td) that generated 114 horsepower. The BMW 524d was equipped with a 2.4L M21 Diesel 16 engine.
