The function of a shock absorber is implied on its name. Shock absorbers or dampers, as what others called it, is the component of the car crafted to ease out the shock impact to disperse kinetic energy by changing motion into heat. Auto shock absorbers like BMW shock absorbers are intended to minimize the effect of off road driving especially on tough and hard pathways. Vehicles that are not equipped with a shock absorber can cause discomfort to the passenger and driver because of the constant bouncing movements produced from the suspension.

Shock absorbers allow the use of higher and lower rate springs to control suspension movements. The absorption of shock can be done through hysteresis, dry fiction, fluid friction, compression of gas and inertial resistance. Inertial resistance affects the acceleration of the vehicle. It is usually carried out by rear shock absorbers through wheel bounce damping or absorption of energy through hydraulic fluid friction. Compression of gas is done through pneumatic shock absorbers. Its main duty is to act as springs to minimize bounce especially on aircrafts.

For automobiles, most of shock absorbers used are meant for fluid friction which allows soft to compression response towards road bumps and stiff to extension reaction towards bounce. The group of valves put under the control of the springs allows these shifting for the car to go with the type of road it is driving on. Most car absorbers nowadays have compressed nitrogen to prevent oil foaming which can interfere with the dumping process of the car.

Earlier cars used dry friction for shock absorption. The components involved to produce friction are wheel brakes, lever pivot and springs. Shock absorptions is also done together with the hysteresis in the car's tires by damping the movement caused by the up and down weight of the tire. The use of stiff socks are needed to damp the wheel bounce since the tire is not as soft as the springs.
