Chevrolet Caprice or Caprice Classic refers to a series of Chevy cars produced from 1965 through 1996 in the United States. The earliest Chevrolet Caprice cars were hardtop 4-door sedans and were made to compete with Ford’s LTD. They were based on the Impala model, which was a highly prestigious car in the 1950s yet it was less expensive than luxury vehicles. Among the Chevrolet full-size cars, which included the Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Del Ray, Chevrolet Biscayne and Chevrolet Bel Air, the Caprice was the most expensive.

In the 1970s, two other models bore the Chevrolet Caprice names, the Australian Holden Statesman and Holden’s in-house-developed full-size car. The first model was later sold in Africa by the GM South Africa as the Chevrolet Caprice and Caprice Classic while the second was distributed in the Middles East also using the Caprice name. These two models however were based on and shared features with their Australian counterparts.

Models marketed in the United States mostly shared features with the Chevrolet Impala but with additional trims and features. The 1976 Chevrolet Caprice was extraordinarily long, even longer than most modern full-size pickups. It was about 191/2 ft long and weighed 4800 lbs. It was downsized in the following year before Ford came up with a smaller version of the LTD. This platform was the same platform used by succeeding Chevrolet caprice models until 1990.

The 1991 Chevrolet Caprice cars were restyled, replacing the 1977 Caprice squared-off design with more aerodynamic sheetmetal. More upgrades went with the latter Chevrolet Caprice models, including new steering wheel, digital speedometer, more stylish and functional console, restyled windows and exterior. Although Chevrolet Caprice has endured the industry’s tough competition for three decades, Chevrolet had to stop its production due to poor response from critics. However, Chevrolet Caprice also left some lasting impressions. The Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 package was the most popular police vehicle and the 1996 Chevrolet Caprice equipped with LT1 engine was regarded as the best police car ever made.
