The Chevrolet Cavalier is one of the most popular cars in the United States since its debut in 1981. It was the first to use the GM J-body platform, an economical front wheel drive auto platform used in the 1980s and 1990s by General Motor cars. Cavalier cars were reliable and had good gas mileage yet they were offered in very affordable prices. This made Chevy Cavalier successful in the auto market in spite its earlier models’ poor crash test ratings.

Most of the Chevrolet Cavalier cars were made in Lordstown, Ohio but there were also production sites in Michigan, Wisconsin and Mexico. From 1981, there were three generations of the Chevrolet Cavalier. The second Cavalier batch was introduced in 1988 and lasted until 1994 while the third was introduced in 1995 and lasted until 2005. Although, the last Chevrolet Cavalier was made by the end of 2004, it was for the 2005 model year run. The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt was launched in place of the Chevrolet Cavalier.

Chevrolet Cavalier model line-up included the 2-door and 4-door base models, 2-door and 4-door Z24, 2-door and 4-door LS sport coupe, 2-door RS coupe, 2-door convertible, 3-door hatchback, 4-door LS and 4-door station wagon. Chevrolet also made Cavalier concept cars, which were exhibited in the 2001 SEMA auto show. These were the Cavalier 220 Sport Turbo Coupe, Cavalier 263 Super Sport, Cavalier Z24R, Cavalier Maui 155 and Cavalier 425 A/FX drag car. These cars boasted their supercharged engines, customized interior and aggressive exterior look in the said show. The purpose of these Cavalier concept cars is to showcase GM J-body platform’s flexibility, performance and potentials.

From 1995 until 2000, Chevrolet Cavalier was also marketed in Japan by Toyota. As agreed by Toyota and General Motors, the models shall be named as Toyota Cavalier. Although it carried the Cavalier name, the Toyota Cavalier had its distinct features such as power folding rear mirrors, side marker lights on the fenders, different taillights, leather shift knob and steering wheel and carpeting on the inside of the trunk lid. Also, the Toyota Cavalier was a right hand drive.
