New Dodge vehicles are powerful, a lot of them equipped with large engines that can produce large amount of torque and horsepower. But despite this, new Dodge vehicles are very fuel efficient. They are also safe for the environment as they do not emit a lot of harmful combustion byproducts. These characteristics, however, are expected to change as the vehicle grows older. When the Dodge oxygen sensors start to deteriorate, you can expect the vehicle’s fuel consumption and emission levels to start rising.

But what is an oxygen sensor and how can it help control the emission levels and fuel consumption of Dodge vehicles? An oxygen sensor is a small electronic sensor inserted in the exhaust system of your Dodge to measure the amount of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gas. There are many types of oxygen sensors. Among the more popular varieties is the heated thimble, unheated thimble, planar, wide-band, and titania. All except the titania oxygen sensor makes use of a zirconia ceramic element for the sensor element.

Dodge oxygen sensors help control the emission levels and fuel consumption of vehicles by providing the engine management computer with the data it needs to control the fuel injection system. The sensor element in O2 sensors create voltage signals or change its resistance when the air to fuel mixture is rich (less than 14.7:1). This voltage signal or change in resistance is constantly being monitored by the engine management computer, which in turn would adjust the mixture of air and fuel being fed to the engine so as to achieve the best possible fuel economy and the lowest possible exhaust emissions.

Dodge oxygen sensors are designed to do their functions well. Unluckily, oxygen sensors are not meant to last for a long time. Contamination with phosphorus from excessive oil consumption, silicone from internal coolant leaks, silicon sealants that are used in the engine and some over-the-counter fuel additives may cause the oxygen sensor to fail prematurely. And even if your Dodge oxygen sensor is well protected or designed to outlast these hazards, automotive maintenance experts would still recommend that the sensors be replaced periodically as indicated in your vehicle manual.
