Covers usually serve one of two purposes; the first is to conceal or hide something and the second is to protect something or prevent it from escaping (as in the case of caps that prevents fluid from spilling). In your Dodge, you can find a lot of these covers and you can probably add a little bit more. Among those covers installed in the vehicle that serves the first purpose are the wheel covers, hubcaps, hood, trunk lid and the like. Then, there are those covers whose main function is to protect vehicle components or prevent scattering of the elements that they cover. An example of those covers is the Dodge valve cover.

The Dodge valve cover is the long lid made of either plastic or metal that lays on top of the cylinder head, covering the various engine valve train components, in particular the valves. The valve cover is a removable lid that may be detached from the cylinder head when the valves need adjusting. Aside from this main function, however, the valve cover is also responsible for containing lubricant oil in the valve train area.

In order for the lubricating system to lubricate the engine valves, it must pump oil from the bottom of the engine to its top. But before the lubricant oil drips back slowly to the bottom of the engine, which is through the drain back holes inside the cylinder head, this oil is first pooled in the valve cover. The valve cover must prevent this oil from leaking or else the engine may get into some serious internal trouble.

But while it is the function of your Dodge’s valve cover to contain the lubricant oil as it drips back to the bottom of the engine, sometimes it is the valve cover itself that causes the leak. Warping of the Dodge valve cover due to the heat of the engine core may cause oil to seep through the valve cover gasket. A corroded valve cover, on the other hand, may develop holes in its surface that may cause the leak. In any of the two cases, it is advisable that the Dodge valve cover be replaced immediately to avoid any further engine problem.
