After the Honda Passport was discontinued in 2002, Honda introduced a
new SUV in 2003, the Honda Pilot. This time, the vehicle is designed
and engineered fully by Honda. The Pilot was then manufactured in
cooperation with Isuzu, another Japanese auto company. The earlier
Honda SUV was truck-based while the Honda Pilot is based on the Acura
MDX, a midsize SUV that had its roots from the Honda Odyssey minivan.
The Honda Pilot and the Acura MDX share underpinnings and powetrain,
including the 240-hp 242 lb-ft torque alloy aluminum J35 3.5L SOHC
24-valve VTEC V6 engine.
With the introduction of the Honda Pilot, Honda once again proved their
excellence in the field of manufacturing superior class autos. It is
true that Honda was not the first Japanese auto company to export cars
to the US and was not the first to offer a minivan, an SUV or any
ground-breaking vehicle, but Honda did give domestic and Euro cars a
tough competition. Among the most successful vehicles from Honda are
the Honda S2000, a roadster that competed well against American muscle
cars; Honda Odyssey, a top selling minivan; and the Acura MDX, a top of
the line luxury SUV.
Honda Pilot is again one of the most promising vehicles from Honda.
This five-door SUV tops other SUVs with its wide array of standard and
optional features, redefining quality at its best. The Honda Pilot has
a unit-body structure strengthened by perimeter frame rails that
secures your ride off-highway. The 2005 model boasts of a
255-horsepower 250 lb-ft torque engine with Drive by Wire Throttle
System and struts up front with coil-spring and multilink arrangement
at the rear, which allows a flat load floor.
The Honda Pilot employs four-wheel drive system known as the Variable
Torque Management 4WD. This delivers power to all its wheels under
acceleration and when it detects slippage. This SUV is also equipped
with ABS-equipped four-wheel disc brakes and precise rack and pinion
steering. It could accommodate up to eight passengers and like the
Odyssey, the rear seats can be folded down for more cargo space.
