Since their introduction up to this date, the Jeep brand has stood for authentic four-wheel-drive aptitude, cutting-edge technology and never-ending enhancement. And the Jeep Liberty is not an exemption to this. The Jeep Liberty is a compact Sport Utility Vehicle that is engineered for exceptional on-road refinement and legendary off-road capability.
Actually, the Jeep Liberty serves as a replacement for the aged Cherokee. Built with unibody construction like the Cherokee, the four-door Liberty wagon rode a wheelbase that is about three inches longer and largely measured seven inches longer.
This new compact SUV is very accommodating with a more sophisticated suspension and available curtain side airbags. The Jeep Liberty was the first Jeep vehicle to show off an independent front suspension (eight-inch suspension travel helps off-highway performance) and used two new Power Tech engines: a 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6.
The Liberty is also the first Jeep vehicle to offer rack and pinion steering. Effort, feel and response are tuned to provide the Jeep Liberty driver precise control and positive feedback regarding the steering force exerted by tires. The Jeep Liberty’s five-speed automatic suspension is a pleasure to drive and provides a 5,000 pound towing capacity.
The Jeep Liberty offered two trim models: the Sport and the Limited edition. The Sport was equipped with a 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine and had contrasting-color body interior while the Limited Edition had a monochromatic exterior and brushed metallic interior trim. The Limited Edition was infused with a 210-hp, 3.7-liter V6 that was optional for the Sport.
The Jeep Liberty has competed against the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Mazda Tribute. In 2002, the Liberty was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year.
