What advantage does an auto manufacturing company get when it reduces the length of its vehicle's wheelbase a couple of inches? Probably none, as most automotive experts would tell us. But for Land Rover, it must have created an advantage. For one, there were more Land Rover Defender 90 vehicles manufactured and sold compared to the Land Rover Defender 110 vehicles that preceded it, which, by the way, was longer by 20 inches in wheelbase. Further, the Land Rover Defender 90 was sold for a longer time compared to the Defender 110.
The Land Rover Defender 90 is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) introduced by Land Rover in the U.S. automobile market in 1994, replacing the Land Rover Defender 110 that was sold in limited numbers for only one year, in 1993. Actually, the two vehicles were essentially the same, except for the wheelbase of the Defender 90 which was shorter by 20 inches than the previous year's model. Also, the Land Rover Defender 90 was available only in 2-door soft-top design while the 110 was available only in 4-door body configuration.
Virtually the same vehicles of different wheelbase lengths, Land Rover Defender 90 parts were basically the same parts used on the previous Defender model. In fact, the Defender 90 was equipped with the same 3.9-liter 182 hp V8 engine that the Defender 110 was equipped with. The body parts and mechanical parts were also fundamentally the same, assembled using a bolted design rather than a unibody structure. Further uniting the two vehicle models were their appearance, which were basically taken from the Land Rover Series vehicles that were sold by the company up until 1974.
The Land Rover Defender 90 was sold as a separate Land Rover Defender model only from 1994 up until 1997. Today, however, the 90-inch wheelbase SUV is sold together with other Land Rover Defender models in 110-inch and 130-inch wheelbase lengths. These vehicles are collectively known today as the Land Rover Defender and are available in Pickup, Hardtop, Station Wagon, High-Capacity Pickup and High-Capacity Double Cab Pickup body configurations.
