Does your Mazda need a Mazda radiator fan? If you always drive your Mazda at a steady 40 mph or so, there may be no need for you to use a radiator fan. This often happens when you drive your car in a clear highway where there are no cars that can obstruct you from speeding up. But if you are driving your Mazda on city streets, which you would surely often do, then it has to be equipped with a radiator fan. The radiator fan aids in the cooling of your Mazda's engine, which is very essential for its proper performance.
The radiator fan is the automotive fan located in between the vehicle's engine and the radiator. The radiator fan cools the coolant that passes through the radiator by pulling the air entering the grille through it. It also cools the engine directly by blowing cool air to the engine block. Without the radiator fan, both the radiator and the engine would mainly rely on the air that enters the grille, which often is not enough to cool them during low speed driving.
Two types of radiator fans may be installed in a vehicle. The first is the engine-driven radiator fan. Engine-driven radiator fans are often installed on rear wheel drive engines, where the engine's output is pointed directly to the grille and can be taken advantage of by the fan. Engine-driven radiator fans are usually connected to the engine's crankshaft by a temperature-sensitive viscous coupling.
Another type of radiator fan is the electric radiator fan. This type of fan is usually used for front wheel drive vehicles, where the engine's output faces the side of the car. Without a way to directly use the engine's output, electric radiator fans instead uses a small electric motor to drive it.
Whether your Mazda is equipped with an engine-driven or an electric radiator fan, it is important that you take care of them properly. Most radiator fans are made of plastic or light metals that may crumple easily when bumped. A damaged radiator fan wouldn't work well for your vehicle's engine and may even cause damages to your radiator. So if your Mazda radiator fan is already broken, you better replace it with new ones that you can find from your Mazda dealer or from various aftermarket parts dealers.
