Fans of Hawaii Five-O, the number one rated series on American
television between September 1968 and April 1980, are most likely to
remember the black Mercury hardtop seen frequently on the show. It was
one of the trademarks that made the series a hit among its viewers. The
black Mercury hardtop was always featured racing away into the cool
Hawaiian nights depicted on the show. Car aficionados could not help
but marvel at the sleekness and style the vehicle was able to project.
The vehicle used in the series was a 1968
Mercury Park Lane. Like all Mercury Park Lane vehicles in existence,
this one was also a full-size automobile produced by the Ford Motor
Company. From 1958 to 1960, the Mercury Park Lane was manufactured
under the Mercury Division of Ford. From 1964 to 1968, however, it was
the Lincoln Mercury Division of the company which became producer of
the vehicle.
What made the Mercury Park Lane the
automotive star of Hawaii Five-O? Enthusiasts say that the killer looks
of the 4-door hardtop is enough to enable it to shine onscreen. Other
people say that it is the undeniable appeal the vehicle exudes which
makes it a standout. Still, others attribute it all to the fact that
the car is well-equipped, the bulk of which include power steering,
power front disc brakes, power windows, power seats and cruise control.
All in all, the Mercury Park Lane is a terrific vehicle especially
manufactured to leave mouths hanging agape. It is the looks, appeal and
extraordinary features combined which make this vehicle a star in its
own right.
