One look at the Mitsubishi 3000GT and you'll be instantly convinced that it's a sports car. With smooth and sleek body curves and a low roofline, you surely wouldn't mistake it for anything else. And when you see it run and roar, you'll further be convinced that it is a real sports car. But Mitsubishi 3000GT has more to offer than sporty looks and a sporty performance, for inside the Mitsubishi 3000GT are high tech driving gadgets that anyone would surely love.
The Mitsubishi 3000GT was a 2+2 seater luxury sports coupe manufactured and imported in the U.S. by Mitsubishi from 1991 until 1999. Named as the Mitsubishi GTO in Japan and in most other Mitsubishi markets, the GTO name wasn't used in the U.S. to avoid confusion and violent reaction among the Ferrari GTO and Pontiac GTO fanatics. A Dodge version of the car, the Dodge Stealth, was also sold from 1991 to 1996. Except for their exterior styling, both vehicles are basically one and the same, sharing the same basic parts and structure.
For most of the years that it was sold in the U.S., the Mitsubishi 3000GT was available in three trim levels: base, SL, and the top-of-the-line VR-4 trim. The base model came equipped with a 3.0-liter 218 hp DOHC 24-valve V6 engine coupled with a standard 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed transmission. The same specifications stands true for the SL trim, except that it was beefed-up with more interior features and luxurious amenities. The flagship VR-4 model, on the other hand, was equipped with a twin turbocharged version of the base's V6 engine that developed 320 horsepower. The VR-4 model also came standard with a 6-speed manual transmission (from 1994 to 1999) and an all-wheel drive system.
For its entire 9-year run in the U.S. vehicle market, the design of the Mitsubishi 3000GT was basically untouched. In fact, the same basic Mitsubishi 3000GT parts were used from the model's introduction until its demise. And except for some styling revisions, the 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT was mechanically identical to the introductory Mitsubishi 3000GT that debuted in 1991.
