Oldsmobile 442 was originally not an Oldsmobile model but a police package intended to deliver several road-handling benefits in addition to powerful straightline acceleration. Together with the police package, 442 includes Oldsmobile's best engine that time – a 330 cid V8. The name 442 was derived from the engine's 4 barrel carb, 4 speed manual transission, and dual exhausts. These specifications and features made Oldsmobile the first division of General Motors to respond to Pontiac in marketing an authentic muscle car – a midsize automobile outfitted with full-size engine.
This muscle car option package was available for F-85 and Cutlass Oldsmobile models and was marketed in the United States automotive market from 1964. It offers heavy-duty front and rear springs and shocks, anti-roll bar and 7.50x14 inch tires. Aside from robust acceleration and exceptional handling, you'll surely be impressed by Oldsmobile 442's all-around balance.
In 1968 through 1971 model years, the Oldsmobile 442 finally became a model in its own right. This Oldsmobile 442 model was still based on the Oldsmobile A-body midsize platform. It rode on a 112 inch wheelbase with three engine options. The Oldsmobile 442 standard engine was finally introduced in 1970. It was a 455 V8 producing 365 horsepower. In 1972 model year, Oldsmobile 442 was reverted to an option package on the F85 and Cutlass S models, but it was not continued in the '80s.
As to the replacement parts, Oldsmobile 442 owners don't have to worry.
