Oldsmobile 88
For half a century, the Oldsmobile 88 became one of the company's leading carrier of the name in style. First introduced in 1949, it evolved in many different models which held its ground in the Olds's production line up until the end of Oldsmobile company itself.
In its first years, the Oldsmobile 88 used a powerful Rocket V8 engine and rode on 76's platform (Oldsmobile 76 was another model that came out prior to 88). The Oldsmobile 88 carried several models; first was the Super 88 that was introduced two year after the 88. It was followed by the Dynamic 88 in 1958 which was closely related to the Super 88. Two 88s were released in the first ha;f of the sixties: the Jetstar and the Starfire. To replace the Dynamic 88, Delta appeared on the second half the sixties while the Delmont 88 soon followed.
In 1985, the new Delta 88 was introduced with the name of Delta 88 Royale Brougham LS which eventually became the most luxurious Olds on rear wheel. When the name 'Delta' was dropped, the 88 or better known as the Eighty-eight carried the name for the next century until the production was stopped in 1999. Although the 88 was not the best selling Olds in history, it was celebrated as one of the longest running Olds model in the company.
