They say everything has an end. Unfortunately, the oldest surviving
American automobile brand, the Oldsmobile, has already reached its
final year in the industry last 2004. But certainly, its 107 years in
the automotive industry is more than enough to make its legacy last
even more than its lifetime. Each of the 35.2 million Oldsmobile cars
it has produced carries this legacy.
Oldsmobile was part of General Motors but it was first manufactured in
1897 by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company founded by Ransom E. Olds. Its
first vehicles were the Curved Dash Olds, which were once among the
best-selling cars in the United States. Due to financial crises, Ransom
Olds sold his company to General Motors and built a new motor company.
Each of the car divisions of the General Motors company was dedicated
for a particular auto market, thus, each car brand had its distinct
characteristics and features. The Oldsmobile cars were marketed by GM
for their technical sophistication. They were the most advanced line of
GM cars before. It was an Oldsmobile car that carried the first
automatic transmission, first used chrome and was first equipped with
automatic headlight dimmers.
Among Oldsmobile’s notable models were the Oldsmobile Cutlass,
Oldsmobile Viking, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Oldsmobile Starfire,
Oldsmobile Firenza, Oldsmobile Achieva, Oldsmobile Aurora, Oldsmobile
Intrigue and Oldsmobile Silhouette. The Cutlass cars were the
best-selling vehicles of Oldsmobile and the best-selling in America as
well. There were different Oldsmobile cars that used this name. They
were personal luxury cars and large sedans (Cutlass Supreme), compact
cars (Cutlass Calais) and mid-size sedans (Cutlass Ciera).
The last Oldsmobile model launched was the Oldsmobile Bravada
introduced in 2002; however, the last 500 models manufactured were
Oldsmobile Alero. These cars had “Final 500” markings, they were
painted in metallic cherry red. Some of these cars are exhibited in the
R.E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, Michigan were the old
Oldsmobile company began.
