The idea of developing different concept cars was the reason why Oldsmobile Starfire came into reality. It was a dream car created for the annual GM motorama extravaganza, Oldsmobile's very first personal luxury car. In its introduction in 1953, the customers found an all new luxury 5-6 passenger sporty personal car that's wrapped within a fiberglass body, a design inspired by the Lockheed Starfire fighter plane. Basically the idea of the design was to lay a futuristic styling. Oldsmobile Starfire then came with wraparound windshield, low belt line, and spinner type wheel covers. As such, Starfire turned to be a plane that has set unto having four wheels with a sophistication of a land machine, a big and powerful Olds.
The success of Starfire's first release inspired the division to push for more improvements in it. Subsequently, it became very popular in the show circuit. In due of this, Oldsmobile decided to put Starfire on top of its lineup as a 98 convertible, rolling from 1954 up until its discontinuation in 1957. It was in the middle of 1961 when its flame was revived. That time, Starfire presented itself as convertible loaded with equipments needed to move through the competition in the personal luxury market. In 1962, two new models joined it, both two-door hardtop coupes which led to reaching its best sales ever. However, this success began declining because of Buick Riviera and Ford Thunderbird. Trying to save its existence, Starfire offered an impressive 345 horsepower-generating V8 engine, one that can accelerate from zero to 96 kilometer per hour within just 8.5 seconds, and reach 112 mph, still lost for the turbocharged Oldsmobile F-85 Jetfire, then finally settled for Oldsmobile Torronado.
