It was supposed to be one of the greatest vehicles the automotive world ever had; but the death and the decline in popularity of the Oldsmobile brand have made the Oldsmobile Toronado a virtually unknown vehicle today. But with popularity aside, the Oldsmobile Toronado is one of the most desirable vehicles ever created by Oldsmobile. With its high performance and powerful Oldsmobile Toronado parts, the vehicle model gained the respect of the automotive press and its various critics, if not by the people in general as reflected by the vehicle's poor sales.

The Oldsmobile Toronado was a luxury and performance vehicle that was introduced by Oldsmobile in 1966 and was sold through the 1992 model year. In its 28 years of existence, four generations of the vehicle were produced, with each generation sporting a distinction in terms of design and performance. All generations of the car, however, stood on the GM E-body platform, which the Toronado shared with the Buick Riviera and the Cadillac Eldorado.

The first generation Oldsmobile Toronado was produced from 1966 to 1970. It was a muscle car that featured distinct styling and architecture. In terms of style, the Toronado featured protruding front fenders, very muscular fender flares, and hidden headlights among other distinct design features. In terms of architecture, the Oldsmobile Toronado was the first American-made front-wheel drive vehicle to reappear since the demise of the Cord automobiles in the 1930s, the first full-size front-wheel drive car, and the first front-drive vehicle to be equipped with an engine as large as its 7.0-liter V8 engine, which became larger in 1968 when it was replaced by a 7.5-liter V8 unit.

The second generation Oldsmobile Toronado, which was sold from 1971 to 1978, ended the vehicle model's contribution to the muscle car era, as the car lost all its muscle car looks and performance. This trend was carried further into the third generation Oldsmobile Toronado, which was sold from 1979 to 1985, when the vehicle as well as its engine became smaller due to energy and environment conservation laws. But the smallest and least powerful Oldsmobile Toronados appeared for the vehicle's fourth and last generation, sold from 1986 to 1992, a generation that also marked the end of the V8 engines for the model.

Declining performance also marked declining popularity and decreasing sales for the Oldsmobile Toronado. Nevertheless, the Oldsmobile Toronado remains to be one of the most desirable vehicles ever manufactured by General Motors in the Oldsmobile brand.
