If the Plymouth Cuda was the product that came out when Plymouth got serious about vehicle performance, the Duster was the result of the Plymouth planning staff's aim to utilize their restyling budget for 1970 model year for a unit that's more desirable than the famous two and four-door Valiants. It was also built to fill the space emptied by the Valiant-based Barracuda when it shifted from A-body to a new E-body platform. And so, with the Plymouth designers and engineers working “under the radar” and fitting all the “hard points” of the Valiant platform, a new and exciting output that the planners aimed for was produced – the Plymouth Duster.
Introduced in 1969 as a 1970 model, the Plymouth Duster was a sporty and performance version of the Plymouth Valiant. Plymouth Duster's arrival left a mark in the muscle car history – it put many larger muscle cars to shame as it arrive giving amazing blast for the buck with its 350 V8 drivetrain. But when it comes to styling, it seemed to be a semi-fastback version of the Valiant. Plymouth Duster came with a curvy exterior styling and a rounded fastback fascia in the rear portion. The front facade was similar to Valiant and the passenger compartment was really pure Valiant.
Plymouth Duster offered various engine options ranging from two slant six cylinder engines to a choice of 318 V8 or a high performance 340 V8. It was actually the 340 V8 engine and the exceptionally affordable price that made Duster a hit. In 1973, all Plymouth Dusters were outfitted with a new grille which made them in line with other A-body vehicles. The taillights and bumper were also changed to comply with the Federally enforced 5 mph standard. The 1974 model year was recorded to be the most successful sales year for the Plymouth Duster. However, it was also the year when the 340 V8 was dropped to give way to the 360 V8 engine. After six years of production, the company decided to discontinue the A-body Plymouth Duster. Although the Duster name lived on, it was used on some models built in F-body platform.
