Rarely would you find a concept car make it to production level, and you would picture it even rarer for a concept car to make it into the production stage with much of its style and parts intact. But achieving such is not impossible, as was proven by the Chrysler Corporation. The auto manufacturing corporation have actually proven that such feat is possible twice; first with the Dodge Viper, and then with the Plymouth Prowler.
The Plymouth Prowler was a modern hot-rod, a "retro" production car as some automotive experts would call it. The concept behind the Prowler appeared as early as 1990, when the word "hot rod-style retro car" was coined in at Chrysler's Pacifica Design Center. The concept eventually led to the development of the Plymouth Prowler concept car, which was first unveiled to the world in the 1993 Detroit International Auto Show. After appearing in a couple more auto shows in the succeeding years, a production model of the vehicle was finally released in 1996 and actual production units of the Plymouth Prowler were on sale starting 1997.
The Plymouth Prowler was a success for the Chrysler Corporation in more than one way. First, the Prowler was only the second concept car that reached production stage with much of the original parts in tact. Second, the Plymouth Prowler was a product of Chrysler's new and experimental assembly and manufacturing methods. Third, the Plymouth Prowler was a vehicle unmatched by any other vehicle during its time and was actually named as the most aluminum-intensive North American vehicle ever produced. And last but not the least; the Plymouth Prowler was one of the only two Plymouth vehicles that continued past the demise of the Plymouth brand, the other one being the Plymouth Voyager.
The Plymouth Prowler was sold until the 2000 model year, after which the Plymouth brand was dropped by Chrysler. The vehicle, however, was sold for two more years under the Chrysler Prowler nameplate. Today, the vehicle is considered by many as an icon—a vehicle in a hot-rod style reminiscent of the 1930s but equipped with very modern Plymouth Prowler parts.
