For almost fifty years of Pontiac Bonneville’s existence in the tough world of automobiles, it has successfully crossed over obstacles and conquered its own weaknesses. Upon introduction, this model appeared to be a high-performing fuel-injected luxury convertible. Lasting until this very generation, it’s considered as one of Pontiac’s most enduring vehicles, still confidently boasting performance, power, amenities and appeal. It’s been considered as Pontiac Division’s costliest and most luxurious model of ‘60s.
The first release of Pontiac Bonneville in the market appeared to be available with only 630 units. Considering that number, Bonneville is worth a collectible. Today it’s the division’s top-of-the-line sedan, produced in quite higher number. Within its progress, technically and aesthetically, this vehicle has undergone much changes and modifications. It’s been expanded to create other trims, a coupe in ‘58 and a four-door body in ’59. And at the latter year, Pontiac’s greatest two marketing inspirations were introduced, the split grille and the Wide Track slogan.
As the division continued to change Bonny’s body style, downsizing happened several times. And in those decisions, Pontiac Bonneville always oddly emerges on top. Indeed one of those moves helped Pontiac solidify its claim to “building excitement”. In fact it became one of Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list in 1987. One of its greatest featured equipments is the Northstar 4.6-liter V8 engine which was regained as an option in the 2004 edition.
Pontiac retained its remarkable characteristics until its last year in the market. The SE, SLE and GXP remained to have superb command on road. SE runs 205 horsepower through an SFI Series II V6 engine, antilock braking system, OnStar, PASS-Key III theft deterrent system, and electronic cruise control, while the SLE has got rear deck lid spoiler, Driver Information Center, and stainless-steel dual exhaust outlets. And you can’t ignore GXP’s 275 horsepower generating Northstar V8 engine, Magnasteer variable-effort steering, StabiliTrak, and long list of extras.
