The Pontiac J2000 is also known as the Pontiac Sunbird. Although the name Sunbird was first used during 1975 until 1980 as a version of the Chevrolet Monza RWD coupe on the GM h-platform, it was popularized by the Pontiac automobile maker. In 1984, the Sunbird replaced the Pontiac J2000 that was produced three earlier. This Pontiac Sunbird is a compact car built on the General Motors J-body platform for which other brands also uses but under different names.
Pontiac Sunbird is General Motor’s smallest American-built car for which it shared chassis and powertrains with the Chevy Cavalier. The Sunbird was offered as a two-door coupe in LE, SE and GT trim but the four-door and two-door convertible models was offered only in LE trim. Almost all Sunbirds were equipped with a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that can boost a 96-horsepower. And only the GT model featured the same engine only turbocharged version coming up with a higher power at 165-horsepower. Turbo option was available for the convertible.
The Pontiac Sunbird had different engines depending on the model year. Available engines for this vehicle are the 1.8 liters OHV I4, fuel injected 1.8 liters OHV I4, 2.0 liters OHC I4, turbo 2.0 liters OHV I4, Quad4 2.3 liters I4 DOHC, Dual or Twin Cam 2.4 liters I4 DOHC, 2.8 liters 60 inches OHV V6, and the 3.1 liters or 191 cubic inches v6.
In 1991, Pontiac Sunbird received a fresh entry model and shelves as the 4-cylinder turbocharged engine was used and the new base Sunbird come as either coupe or sedan body styles in addition to the previous trims. It had the first 3.1-liter V6 engine that generates 140-horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Standard transmission for the 2.0-liter 40cylinder engines is the 5-speed manual and optional on the 3.1-liter V6 engines, with a 3-seed automatic being the optional gearbox.
For the remaining years before the Sunbird was replaced by the Sunfire in 1994, it had some major and minor changes including additional features for driving and handling performance and even for comfort, convenience and safety.
