Coming from General Motor’s lineup of automobile makers which is Pontiac, the GTO is a muscle car that was produced for a decade from 1964 up to 1974. As others say, the GTO is the first and a genuine muscle car for it exemplifies what a real high-performance automobile should be. Muscle cars are outfitted with large V8 engines in midsized cars for a quite startling performance and setting off a strong rivalry among manufacturers to produce the most powerful and extreme machine.
The name GTO was derived by Pontiac from Ferrari’s GTO which is known as Grand Turismo Omologato for which the term omologato or homologated in English means that the model is truly a production car and that the Pontiac produced a hundred GTOs at least. Because of its extraordinary capability of competing in a European sports car race considering its size and weight – Pontiac called it as The Great One and nicknamed by the fans as “The Goat”.
Started as meek experiment expecting only around 5, 000 sales but had successfully sold over 32, 000 pieces, GTO had grown into something that was fantastic on the Part of Pontiac and General Motors as a whole. Year after year, improvements for the GTO were made including the changes in the engine for a higher level of driving and handling performance. Additional features were also given to GTOs as time passed by.
Latest development and significant change for the Pontiac GTO that brought underwhelming success in the preceding years is the optional hood scoops which is considered to be the defining feature of the 2005 GTO. Another is the use of a larger engine for which the GTO share the new base engine in the Corvette called LS2. The LS2 boosts 405 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque from a new 6.0-liter V8 based on the aged LS1.
