Back in the era where no other vehicles can transport passengers from their location to their destination except trains, station wagons have already manifested their existence and participated in the transportation business, as there’s no other convenient means to transport passengers and/or carry their luggage to their estates or to a hotel. Those early days of station wagons bore no resemblance to the contemporary station wagons. While the first station wagon was built with lightwood framing plus dark paneling, a team of horses propels the wagon into the passenger’s various local destinations.
The evolution of station wagon gave birth to the concept of today’s new station wagons. These vehicles adopted the sedan-type car bodies but were built on a truck platform. Station wagons cannot be mistaken from other vehicle bodies like that of a minivan, hatchback car, or sport-utility vehicles as station wagon’s passenger cabin area is extended to the rear window and sometimes the normal trunk area of the vehicle. The extended rear was intended to be the wagons cargo area for the passenger’s luggage or cargo. The introduction of the station wagons were mostly considered a great relief in the automotive industry as an individual does not need to carry with him a bulky automobile anymore but can carry baggage.
One of the manufacturers who took part in the production of station wagons was General Motor’s another marque, Pontiac. Pontiac models were promoted to be sporty, aggressive, and convey impression of youthful feeling. Pontiac Safari is Pontiac’s versions for station wagons. Pontiac Safari was actually not a model name for station wagons but was in fact used as a naming system suffixed in some of Pontiac lineup of vehicles. Pontiac Safari vehicles were the station wagon versions of Pontiac vehicle models like Pontiac LeMans, Pontiac Bonneville, Pontiac Parisienne, and Pontiac Star Chief.
Pontiac Safari station wagon’s participation on the automotive industry contributed to the history of station wagons that started to display its functions to transport the passenger from the train station to their destination. Later versions for station wagons proved to be a relief and something to be treasured as body styles and designs made it as one of the glamorous vehicles in the industry.
