Porsche 924
Porsche 924 entered its production state in 1976 and rested in 1988. This two-door, 2 plus
2 seat sports car coupe has been the replacement for the Porsche 914. The launching
of the Porsche 924 saved the company from financial ruins and its escalating sales
production created the revenue that helped out in the continuation of the 911’s
production and development.
The 924 was originally intended to stand up as Volkswagen’s flagship sports coupe
as Porsche was commissioned by Volkswagen to design the car. However, the severe
oil crisis bothered Volkswagen and was prompted to put the project on hold and
later on to back out of it to move on with the decision of pursuing with the Quattro
Coupe model instead. Therefore, Porsche negotited with Volkswagen to buy the design
for 100 million DM since the latter needed a replacement for the Porsche 914.
And so the deal went on specifying that the Volkswagen employees will be the ones
to do the actual production-line work.
Not long enough Porsche executives had realized the need to integrate a higher-performance
version of the 924 to be able to fill up the gap between it and the 911s. So for
the 1978 model, Porsche 924 Turbo was introduced. Through time, Porsche 924 has
warmed much the hearts of a number of auto aficionados. By 1986, the Porsche 924’s
sales dwindled and the 944 version model was soon ready for release as its replacement.
The 924 was indeed a leading bestseller for Porsche. Finally, its production ceased
in 1988. To date, the 924 has been one of Porsche’s bestselling models. The car
has also been referred to as “the best-handling Porsche in stock form”.
