There are two main lines of cars made by Saturn, a division of General Motors, the S-Series and the L-Series. The first is a series of small cars while the second is a series of large cars, in Saturn’s standards. The Saturn L100 belongs to the L-series; however, upon introduction of the L-series cars, particularly the sedans and wagons in 2000, they used different names. The L100 was referred to as the Saturn LS while the rest were named LS1, LS2, LW1 and LW2. The “S” signified a sedan while the “W”, a wagon.
All the Saturn L-series cars were renamed in 2001. The L100 shared with the L200 its 4-cylinder engine, which is mated with 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission. It was a front wheel drive mid-size 4-door sedan based on the German-made Opel Vectra B platform. For the 2001 model upgrade, Saturn L100 was offered with optional inflatable side-curtain airbags. In 2002, these were made standard to the L100. Middle of 2002, a rear-seat DVD video entertainment system, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, and automatic climate system were added in the list of optional features.
In 2003, the Saturn L100 gained a fresh-looking front end with its new chrome grille and larger headlights. The rear end was redesigned as well giving the 2003 Saturn L100 a more modern appearance. The interior was likewise modified with the new silver plastic console and instrument panel trims. It featured 60/40 split folding rear seats and can comfortably seat up to five passengers. However, more than these aesthetic enhancements is the kind of ride the Saturn L100 affords its occupants. What is admired most with the upgraded Saturn L100 is its precise steering and smooth handling abilities. Acceleration was fairly good, too; thanks to its 4-cylinder engine that keeps it going at a desirable pace. It may not be as large and as swift as other large sedans, but Saturn L100 is surely a dependable car.
