Subaru RX
With the reputation of marketing a wide range of vehicle with unconventional
look and style, the Subaru keeps their image burning in every car lover who wishes
to be bold and different in a way that is still recognizable with the creation
of the Subaru RX. Though the RX looks like the GL-10 without a moonroof, it is
designed uniquely to look different. The RX was released in the eighties with
upgraded suspension, standard turbo, and a 5 speed manual transmission, and dual-range
4WD standard, not very common in the Subaru line-up.
The RX was offered in two body style: the sedan and the coupe which came out
in different mechanics. Some model years like the 85 and 86 had part-time 4WD
with "shift on the fly" 4WD, that is the vehicle could shift in and out of 4WD
while the vehicle was in motion. It was also possible to shift between "high"
and "low" with the vehicle in motion, provided the clutch was depressed.
In the following year, the RX was made with a "full time" dual range 4WD in which
a center differential was employed to let the vehicle to stay in 4WD at all times
for additional road control. Another addition was the "Diff Lock" switch which
locks the center differential. This provide a 50/50 power split for added traction.
In 1989, the automatic transmission was made available. Full time 4WD was also
available on the Turbo wagon, sedan, and 3 door coupe but it was only offered
with dual range on the RX
