The performance of the Suzuki Esteem has always been rated as acceptable, and in its eight years of existence, the car never really received any better rating. But what the heck! The Suzuki Esteem is an economy car and one wouldn't really expect a lot of performance from such cars. The problem with the Suzuki Esteem is that almost every other low-priced subcompact that it has competed with has beaten it in almost every aspect.
The Suzuki Esteem was a subcompact car introduced by Suzuki Motors to the U.S. automotive market in 1995 and sold through the 2002 model year. The car was actually just the fourth Suzuki vehicle sold in the U.S. and the second car after the Suzuki Swift (the other two were off-roaders). The Suzuki Esteem, however, was slightly larger than the Swift. The Esteem was also manufactured in Japan and its body was not shared with other vehicles, unlike the Swift that was manufactured in Canada and shared its body with the Chevrolet Sprint.
The Suzuki Esteem has some good characteristics, and among the most dominant of these is the car's stingy fuel consumption. In some test drives, the Suzuki Esteem (specifically the Suzuki Esteem GLX Sport sedan) registered 28 mpg in city streets and 35 mpg on highways. The Suzuki Esteem also offers some standard features that one wouldn't normally expect from a car on its price range, including air conditioning, a cassette player and rear defogger. Other low-priced subcompacts would have all those features as options for an additional cost.
Sadly, the Suzuki Esteem can beat its rivals in the low-price range subcompact arena only with these features. In all other aspects, the Suzuki Esteem lags behind. Ride quality is poor and road and engine noise goes to unacceptable levels. The vehicle's set of engines prove themselves sufficient for around-town driving but lacks the power to pass up other cars. Also noticeable is the lack of upgrades done on the model for its entire eight-year stint, making it lag behind in features and style against its competitors.
