Toyota RAV4
Simply put, the four by four market has never been quite the same after Toyota introduced the Toyota RAV4. It first started its design and development in 1984 and a peek was provided in 1989, but not until 1994 was the world offered a chance in this innovative and revolutionary compact SUV. It took a long time for the Toyota RAV4 to come out from design to the streets of the world, but everyone states that it was worth the wait.
The Toyota RAV4 first came out as a two door. Sales were immediately very strong doubling in the month soon to follow. Toyota first offered the RAV4 in Japan and the release in Europe followed soon after. The RAV4 featured a 2.0-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine originally used in the second generation Camry. The RAV4 was offered with either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. It had a full-time all-wheel-drive system, and offered an optional locking center differential.
Toyota hit the nail dead center with their Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive (RAV4), they combined the conventional passenger-car elements with the features of a light, off-road vehicle. The dimensions of the Toyota RAV4 allowed it to be very maneuverable on and off road in any condition. The next year, 1995, saw the arrival of the four-door version because of the publics clamor for it.
Driven by its Asian and European success, Toyota released the Toyota RAV4 in US soil in 1996. More accessories and retuning were done to comply with the strict US laws. Cleaner emissions were provided and more safety accessories and options. Also with the great competition more and more accessories and enhancements were done. 1996 also saw the release of the two-wheel drive RAV4.
In 2002, the Toyota RAV4 was completely redesigned to boost its sales and give it a fresh new look. More packages were provided as options, but many used to be options were now standard depending on the trims. Stronger and more powerful engines were also provided for the Toyota Rav4, the latest being a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (2AZ-FE) that puts out 161 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. The Toyota Rav4 still continues to be a revolutionary vehicle in its segment; it has paved the way for other entries in its segment and the competition but is still the vehicle that sets the bar.
