Volvo unveiled a new and awesome model in 1982 at various press conferences in Europe, the Volvo 760. It was then a “modern” car, abreast with the latest in auto styling, performance and safety features. At first the Volvo 760 was conceptualized as a replacement to the Volvo 200 Series, a line of cars known for its highest safety standards. However, the 200 Series still sold fairly well in the market and thus, the Volvo 760, the first of the 700 series, went on its own and gave the auto users a more competent option.
Both the Volvo 760 and the older Volvo 200 Series became high selling models. The Volvo 760, particularly, vied in the luxury car market. It was the first Volvo vehicle that ventured into this segment of the industry. The first Volvo model is the Volvo 760 GLE, a saloon powered by a 156-horsepower V6 engine, also used by the 200 Series. Later, a 6-cylinder B28E petrol engine and a turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel TD24 engine were available for the Volvo 760 GLE models. Either of the engines was mated with a new AW71 four-speed automatic transmission that improved its fuel consumption by 20% at most.
The turbo engine originated from Volkswagen. It was quiet yet extra powerful, giving the Volvo 760 GLE a highly satisfying ride. With this engine, the Volvo 760 can go from 0 to 100 kph in just 13 seconds, making it one of the fastest diesel engine-equipped cars. Complementing Volvo 760’s extreme power is its uniquely designed suspension that gave it constant track width under all driving conditions. Absorbing lateral and tortional forces are two suspension arms, a cross strut and two torque struts over and under the axle.
Volvo 760 seemed to be craving for more attention so on its second year, it added a 2.3L B23 ET turbocharged and intercooled engine in its options. Along with this high-power engine was a stiffer chassis and harder shock absorbers that again promised buyers a remarkable performance. Indeed, the new models of Volvo 760 lived up to their reputation as they afforded improved handling at even higher speeds. Through the years, Volvo 760 still went through a lot of significant developments that made it one of the most successful cars of Volvo. Unfortunately, it ended production in 1990 to give way to the new Volvo 940 cars.
