When you hear the name Volvo, what’s the first thing that comes into your mind? It must be safety, right? This is because this Swedish automaker has long been renowned for producing cars with advanced safety engineering. Volvo has one of the most clearly-defined images in the industry and its name has become synonymous to safety.
The Volvo 940 has been recognized as one of the last models in the long-running line of large rear-wheel drive vehicles from Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturer. Launched in the United Sates for 1991 model year, the 940 Series is available in sedan and wagon body styles and in GLE, Turbo and SE trim levels. These vehicles in the 940 Series are believed to be a cosmetic re-skinning of the Volvo 740 and 760 Series. The GLE versions are equipped with a dual-cam 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 153-horsepower while the Turbos and the SE models are powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter drivetrain with a single overhead camshaft and is capable of generating 162-horsepower.
All models come with standard 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes, a driver’s airbag and new automatic-locking differential developed by Volvo. Other standard equipments include rear fog lights, air conditioning, locking glove box, power windows, central locking system and cruise control.
In 1991, the 940 SE flagship sedan was discontinued along with its twin-cam 153-horsepower 2.3-liter 4-cylinder to give way to a new 960 model. The following year, the 940 GL sedans and wagons were replaced by a new base model outfitted with the same 114-horsepower, 2.3-liter engine. For 1994 model year, the 940 is available in Level I or Level II model. The 940 I is motorized by Volvo’s 4-cylinder engine that cranks out 114 horsepower while the Level II is offered with a turbocharged version of the same engine which turns out 162 horsepower. The 940 Level II also comes with long list of standard features. In 1995 model year, both models of 940 were discontinued.
