Established in Sweden in 1927, Volvo Cars has been developing quality cars that
are equipped with luxury features, performance engines, and environment friendly
parts. This had made Volvo very popular throughout the world. Aside from these,
one of the company’s epitomes is to create safe vehicles. This is the reason why
every Volvo has tons of safety features guaranteed to protect the passengers on
board.
The most significant step towards their goal came in the early years of 1950s
when Volvo developed and used laminated glass in the PV model as an initial step
towards their goal. The PV series was among the first to have the "safe body"
or what is now called a unibody. They have also developed ‘safety cage’ and crumple
zones. The safety cage’ that imitates fighter plane capsules while the crumple
zones tend to minimize the amount of impact to the passengers by distributing
the impact to the hood of the vehicle while increasing the amount of time it takes
the car to come to a complete stop in comparison to object the car hits.
By 1970s, the federal government developed safety standards that all vehicles
are require to meet 5 mph impact-test requirements. This is with regards to the
front and rear bumpers. Volvo, with their established reputation to commit themselves
by making safe cars easily passed the requirements. By the eighties, the requirement
was lowered down from 5 to 2.5 mph.
But the reduction to the safety requirement does not affect the production of
safe and reliable Volvo cars. Volvo continuously produced good vehicle until today
making the heritage lives after almost eight decades of car manufacturing.
